The Permanence of Chipmunks

We know that Three Dee is forever. And I'm reasonably sure that this is eternal, as well.

Twentieth Century Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks" are plotting their third outing -- and this time, they'll be in 3D.

Studio has set a release date of Dec. 16, 2011 for the three-quel.

People around here like to trash DreamWorks animated films and occasionally the Pixar product. Happily, nobody touches Alvin and his brothers. We all know quality when we see it.

Although it makes good today's-wire headlines, I wouldn't single out Chipmunks as an isolated phenomenon. (And that coming from a disgruntled Froggy defender, who'd gladly "touch" it):
The craze of mainstream Dee is causing EVERY franchise owner, from Ghostbusters to Final Destination to either pump out "just one more", or get that stalled sequel out of limbo, just for the trendy marketing excuse.

...You'd think it was 1983.

And WHAT could possibly make Fox give up their treasured Christmas Day opening, that they've jealously guarded for the last six years?:

Right now, the threequel has the date to itself. Set to open a week later on Dec. 23 is Steven Spielberg's 3D family entry "Adventures of Tintin:"

Yep, Fox, and we know why you've got the week before Christmas "all to yourself"...Nobody else wanted it. ;)
And just like PatF had to lose their game of studio-chicken and open their family movie during the slow weeks, looks like only Spielberg and Peter Jackson could scare Fox out of being the One Christmas-Vacation Movie everybody goes to see.
